Local self-government bodies, mayors, and city councils are elected for a 4-year term, and naturally, this term needs to be renewed after 4 years, — Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists in the United Arab Emirates, Report informs via Interpressnews.
To a journalist’s question about the statement of the Congress of the Council of Europe, which calls on the government to postpone this year’s local elections, the Prime Minister replied that everyone must respect the constitution.
«This also reminds us of Ukrainization. Elections are not held in Ukraine, despite the fact that the mandates of specific public bodies have already expired. We, of course, cannot allow all this. Everyone in Georgia must respect the constitution and legislation. Local self-government bodies, mayors, and city councils are elected for a 4-year term, and naturally, this term needs to be renewed after 4 years,» the Prime Minister noted.
The Bureau of the Congress of the Council of Europe has issued a statement calling on the Georgian government to «pave the way for free and fair repeat elections at the national level.» According to the Bureau, «without a substantial change in the political environment, local elections should be postponed.»
