Deputies of the People’s Party of Kazakhstan have called for a review of the status of foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the country.
According to a document obtained by Report, this was prompted by the activities of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Kazakhstan.
The document notes that Kazakhstanis do not welcome foreign entities forcibly imposing alien values that shock society and corrupt the youth. “Citizens do not want to become hostages to other people’s games,” the appeal stated.
Nearly 200 NGOs in Kazakhstan are funded from abroad, with 70% of them receiving funds from various sources in the US. As many as 165 foreign donors operate in the country. Support is mainly provided for projects in the areas of media, human rights protection, promotion of democracy, and liberal reforms.
Deputies propose creating national legislation regarding foreign-funded structures in Kazakhstan. At the same time, exceptions should be made for humanitarian and scientific organizations to avoid hindering the development of a healthy civil society.
“Our common goal is to strengthen sovereignty, and we will not allow the imposition of foreign values to be deemed as tolerance,” emphasized the deputies of the People’s Party of Kazakhstan.
