The architect and founder of independent Azerbaijan, who was able to find the right way in the most complex and difficult situations, confirmed his commitment to his people with his historical services, loyalty, practical activities, and leadership determination for the sake of the existence of Azerbaijan. National leader Heydar Aliyev, who was always proud of the name Azerbaijani, dedicated his entire honorable life to the welfare of his people, the strengthening of Azerbaijan, and the recognition of Azerbaijan as an independent country in the world. The brightest, brightest and most magnificent pages of the history of modern Azerbaijan are connected with the name of national leader Heydar Aliyev. In the 70s of the last century, during the first leadership of Azerbaijan, like other allied republics, training of national military personnel in Azerbaijan, which was part of the Soviet Union and controlled from Moscow, was the Great Leader's greatest wish. At that time, the visionary policy of the Great Leader, who established Jamshid Nakhchivanski Military High School in Azerbaijan as a base for the realization of this desire, which required a great risk and above all, bore fruit in the following years. At a time when the Soviet regime and communist ideology dominated, the initiative aimed at training national officer cadres required great skill, but the Great Leader was able to cross this "red line" with determination. The author of such an initiative, which requires courage, could only be a leader like Heydar Aliyev, who thinks about the future of his people, is deeply attached to his nation, and has the power to realize his desire to devote his life to the prosperity of his homeland. Thousands of professional military personnel were trained at the Military Lyceum, which was founded in 1971 on the initiative of national leader Heydar Aliyev.
The Great Leader, who paid special attention to the training of Azerbaijani military personnel with the idea that "freedom and independence are the national wealth of every nation", said that every citizen, every young man who tries to defend the Motherland is dear, precious and valuable to us. The truth that the Great Leader was sure of was this: "The unity of the people and the army is the basic principle of the existence of the state." At the time when Armenia occupied our lands, national leader Heydar Aliyev, who said that "we need to have a strong army to be able to conduct peace negotiations with courage", proudly stated that our republic has powerful Armed Forces that protect the national security, peace of the population, and our borders. The cadets who once sat behind the desks of the Military Lyceum later fought as experienced officers in the battles for Karabakh. In the battles of April 2016, the graduates of the Military Lyceum named after J. Nakhchivanski showed great skill and bravery. It is very proud that two of the three officers who were awarded the honorary title of National Hero of Azerbaijan in the April battles are graduates of this educational institution.

On July 20, 1990, after returning to his native land from Moscow, the great leader Heydar Aliyev, who stayed in Baku for a day, returned to his ancestral home Nakhchivan due to the situation, and shortly after was elected Chairman of the Nakhchivan MR Supreme Assembly at the request of his compatriots, continued his reforms related to the construction of the army here. made Under the leadership of the great leader Heydar Aliyev, who increased his efforts to protect Nakhchivan during the occupation of our lands by Armenia, a decision was made in the parliament of the autonomous republic to withdraw the 41st border detachment of the USSR and the 75th mechanized motorized rifle division from the territory of Nakhchivan. Taking such a bold step in Nakhchivan at a time when the "Golden Army" units remained in Azerbaijan, handing over the weapons, property, and civilian equipment belonging to the Russian army to the newly created National Army and the 1st Border Detachment of Azerbaijan could only be possible as a result of a well-thought-out and intelligent policy. It was in those years that the funds collected for the Development and Defense Fund of Nakhchivan were used to strengthen the National Army. Regarding the matter, in the decision "On the determination of the status of the units of the armed forces of the former USSR in the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and a number of issues related to their interaction with the local state authorities" adopted by the Presidium of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan MR on January 2, 1992 it was noted that the commanders of the military units should submit written information to the Supreme Assembly of the autonomous republic about all of the above and everything in their orders within five days, and without the permission of the Supreme Assembly, nothing should be taken from the territory of the republic, except for the personal belongings of the military personnel.
And so it happened. The equipment and military equipment of the mentioned military units were kept in the autonomous republic and given to newly created military units.
Our Armed Forces were strengthened as a result of the reforms carried out by the Great Leader, who returned to Baku at the request of the people in 1993 due to the well-known events that took place in the country, first as the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and then as the President, who took important steps for the sake of stability in the country. Higher military schools were established, where qualified personnel with different orientations were trained. Military cooperation with neighboring countries was strengthened.
The battles of April 2016, which are called the beginning of our historical Victory over Armenia, showed the strength and power of our Armed Forces. As a result of the strikes on the enemy's firing points and artillery installations, as a result of the relevant measures implemented by our reconnaissance groups, the Lalatape Height and its surrounding areas of strategic importance were freed from occupation. In the territories liberated by our units, new positions were established and engineering and fortification measures were implemented.
Attention to increasing the defense power of Nakhchivan and ensuring its security was also organized at a high level. In Nakhchivan, special attention was paid to the supply of military equipment and equipment to the Border Division and the General Army in Alahid. The successful completion of the Gunnut operation in the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and the liberation of 11,000 hectares of territory under the occupation of the enemy was an example of the strength of our armed forces and the strengthening of the military potential of Nakhchivan. These reforms were later continued by President, Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev on a larger scale.
The logical result of the reforms carried out in the field of army building was the Victory we won in the Second Karabakh War, which started on September 27, 2020 and lasted for 44 days. Arming our soldiers with love for the Motherland, love for the land, and love for the flag, the President, Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, who has a comprehensive approach to the modernization of military units, continued the policy of building an army, and increased the combat determination and combat readiness of the personnel of our Armed Forces. As a result of the reforms, the name of the Azerbaijan Armed Forces is included among the 50 strongest armies in the world. Only during the liberation of the city of Shusha from occupation, the amazing heroism of our servicemen, the liberation of Shusha from occupation by defeating the enemy with the lightest weapons, became a heroic epic of our servicemen.
President, Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev said, "We have not only demonstrated the war of the 21st century, we have won an unprecedented Victory in the world. In the face of several fortifications of the enemy in difficult terrain, we put professionalism, skill, strength, military science and expelled the enemy from our lands" is confirmed by the study of combat experience of Azerbaijani soldiers in the most famous military schools of the world.
The victorious Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev has repeatedly emphasized that not only the most modern weapons, but also the feelings of loyalty to the Motherland of our heroic soldiers are based on the achievement of this glorious Victory. These words of our head of state are a clear manifestation of the high value given to the heroism and professionalism of the soldiers and officers of our Armed Forces: "This is a new generation method of war, which requires planning, technical equipment, application of technologies, proper planning and implementation of operations, fighting ability and morale of our soldiers. unites, forms a unity. However, I have already said this several times, it is not our technical means that won this victory, but our soldiers and officers. They completely freed our land from the enemy and granted this victory to our people. Therefore, the first hero of this victory is an Azerbaijani soldier, an Azerbaijani officer, and everyone should know this." This evaluation is an expression of the loyalty of President Ilham Aliyev to the policy of the wise person Heydar Aliyev, who continues the policy of the Great Leader in the direction of building the army, as in all fields.
