Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), has revealed the possible consequences of the U.S. stopping its financial aid to the World Health Organization during the panel titled "Reimagining Multilateralism for a Multipolar World" at the 12th Global Baku Forum, APA reports.
WHO Director-General, stated during the panel that the United States provides 30% of the WHO's funding, and its withdrawal from the organization would lead to the suspension of malaria control and other health programs.
"As a result, 700 laboratories will cease operations. This will impact the fight against malaria, polio, and other diseases in several African countries and could lead to pandemics. Consequently, many people will be deprived of access to basic healthcare services. The cessation of U.S. funding for WHO has led to an increase in maternal and child deaths in Ethiopia, as well as the spread of hepatitis in Bangladesh. The number of people infected with malaria could rise by 15 million. We urge the U.S. to continue its funding until additional financial resources are found," said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
