Protesters set fire to police cruiser in Buenos Aires

People rallying outside the Argentine parliament overturned a police cruiser and set it on fire, APA reports citing TASS.

The crowd at the rally numbers several thousand people. Before it started, police officers clashed with soccer fans who came to the protest to support pensioners demanding better living conditions amid rising prices.

About 20 minutes after the protest kicked off, the police hurled tear gas grenades and began pushing the crowd out of the square using water cannons. Clashes are now taking place in adjacent streets. The protesters are pelting the police with stones and bottles.

Fans of several Argentine soccer clubs decided to join the regular rallies of pensioners after the police used force against the elderly outside the parliament last week. Many participants in the current rally held signs reading, "Only a coward can fight pensioners."

Argentina's Security Ministry warned on March 11 that it would take action to maintain order during rallies and threatened to ban protesters from going to stadiums.
